Ger Loughnane believes Podge Collins will live to regret his decision to choose football over hurling.

The All-Ireland winning forward and his brother Sean have opted to line out exclusively for their father Colm's Clare footballers next year after being issued with an ultimatum by hurling boss Davy Fitzgerald.

Writing in the Irish Daily Star, two-time All-Ireland winning manager Loughnane said the brothers' decision didn't surprise him.

"From the outside, many will be baffled by this. After all, Podge Collins is an All Star and has a real chance of winning more hurling All-Irelands with Clare," Loughnane stated.

"With the Banner footballers, even a Munster title looks way beyond reach. But Podge's move doesn't surprise me.

"He comes from a strong football background. Both his father and mother's side of the family are immersed in the game. From the time that he went to school, football was always Podge's main sport.

"He became an accidental hurler and once his father started managing the Clare footballers, he was always going to go there.

"I think leaving hurling is a big loss to Podge and he'll realise that down the line. When you leave a sport for a while, it's very hard to get back to the standard needed to shine at inter-county level."
