McElkennon no confidence vote thrown out
May 13, 2006
Following a full meeting of the Cavan county board, Lacken Celtics' attempt to have a vote of no confidence taken on the future of county boss Martin McElkennon has been unanimously rejected.
The call from the Lacken club came after the Breffni Blues lost out to Down in the preliminary round of the Ulster SFC. However, the fact that Lacken player and Cavan vice-captain Finbarr Reilly failed to travel with the county squad following the decision to omit him from the starting fifteen for the game against the Mourne men was seen as a major contributing factor in the request.
The full county board met on Thursday night and rejected the call outright and also expressed their disappointment at the affair.
"The Committee unanimously rejected the letter and they expressed their unequivocal and complete support for the county team management which was elected for a two-year period at the October meeting of Cavan County Board in 2005," stated a Cavan Management Committee statement.
"The Committee expressed their appreciation to the team management for the tremendous ongoing commitment they are giving to Cavan football and wished them every success in their endeavours."
