JM Camogs Give Blood

Supporting a good cause within the NHS was a no-brainer for the ladies of John Mitchel's Camogie team.
Supporting a good cause within the NHS was a no-brainer for the ladies of John Mitchel's Camogie team of Birmingham. With girls both working and studying in the professions of nursing, medicine, radiography and physiotherapy the value of blood donation is duly appreciated.

As individuals the players have gained so much from been part of a team which caters for girls from Irel...and, Birmingham and afar; both novice and pro in the skills of the ancient Irish game. So as a team, choosing to donate blood was a simple gesture of giving something back.

NHS Give Blood representative Karen Healy will visit the girls weekly training session in Shirley Park this Thursday 26th June @ 7.30pm to meet the girls who have pledged. Karen's mother Ann Healy has given years of service to John Mitchel's hurlers and also works for the NHS blood group. Coincidentally when Cáit Nee, Eva Hicks, Alice Quinn and Emma Carroll first approached Karen, timing couldn't have been better as www.blood.co.uk had just finished their National Blood Week campaign:
The Greatest Team in the World

This year we are encouraging people to join 'The Greatest Team in the World' by signing up as donors during National Blood Week. And with a summer of sport to come, we have been asking people to donate ahead of the football World Cup, Wimbledon tennis tournament and other events expected to have an impact on the number of people attending sessions.

National Blood Week activities will take place across the country, but keep an eye on our Twitter and Facebook pages (www.facebook.com/NHSBlood; @GiveBloodNHS) for online activities. World Blood Donor Day, internationally recognised by the World Health Organisation, aims to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products across the world.

Huge credit to the girls named above who have spear headed the team effort. League captain, and the team's longest serving player Alice Quinn has extra appreciation for the value of blood donation commenting:

"Also on a personal note a wonderful lady and friend of mine, Kelly Jackson, was about to begin training with us last year before an accident where she needed many units of blood. Kelly is incredibly positive setting up a website www.kellyssmile.com .This is to support burns and amputee patients. Nothing combines the two at the minute but she is trying. I'm delighted Kelly is coming along to support JM Camógs Give Blood on Thursday and that the girls will all be supporting Kelly".

On the field of play the girls have won all league and championship games to date this year through determined effort and team spirit. Their efforts to promote blood donation is not necessarily a campaign aimed at changing the world. A humble achievement of a small change through a team effort; and the possibility of just a few considering to donate for the first time would be a goal achieved.
