Kiely "has all the qualities that I would look for in a manager"

Paul Kinnerk

Paul Kinnerk didn’t hesitate when he was asked to become Limerick senior hurling coach.

Having been involved in a coaching capacity as neighbours Clare won three U21 All-Irelands between 2012 and ’14, he was also part of the Banner County management team as the Liam MacCarthy Cup was captured in 2013.

When John Kiely invited the former Limerick footballer to hook up with his native county last year, it was an invitation that Kinnerk was always going to accept:

“The opportunity arrived with Limerick through John, and it was a case of this is a guy that has all the qualities that I would look for in a manager,” he tells The Irish Times.

“John is a proper leader, has the X-factor in his ability to read situations and then control it in such a way. Then he’s very in tune with the way hurling is being played from a tactical standpoint at the moment.

“The biggest thing is that John is a person that is able to inspire those around him and the players all want to play for him and there’s full buy-in there.”
