Cian McCarthy has opted out of the Cork senior hurling panel.

According to The Evening Echo, the Sarsfields clubman informed Jimmy Barry-Murphy and his selectors that he no longer wishes to be part of the squad.

Selector Johnny Crowley said: "Yes, that is the case.

"Cian told Jimmy Barry-Murphy that he wanted to opt out and there is obvious disappointment with his decision but that is his wish."

The son of former dual legend Teddy McCarthy was introduced as a substitute in last Sunday's victory over Galway but had failed to secure a place on the starting 15 so far in Division 1A.
