Davy Fitzgerald has capped an amazing year for Clare hurling by being named RTE Sport Awards Manager of the Year.

The former goalkeeper, who led the Banner to their first All-Ireland SHC title since 1997 in September, saw off competition from fellow managers Liam Buckley (soccer), Philip Doyle (women's rugby), Jim Gavin (Gaelic football), Willie Mullins (horse racing), Eamon Ryan (ladies football), Billy Walsh (boxing) and Tony Ward (camogie) to scoop the prestigious award.

The Manager of the Year was chosen by members of the media.

"This is great, but to tell you the truth you can't beat playing," Fitzgerald said after accepting the award from RTE Head of Sport Ryle Nugent.

"To see so many sports people here tonight, it's an honour to be able to do what you do."
