Ulster club IFC final: Truagh win ensures Monaghan double

November 30, 2013

Truagh's Mark Counihan
Truagh (Monaghan) 0-17
Eskra (Tyrone) 0-12

Truagh completed the second leg of a memorable double for North Monaghan tonight when they accounted for Eskra in the Ulster club IFC final.

Over 3,000 spectators were present in the Athletic Grounds to see Truagh follow up on Emyvale's victory over Killeeshil in the club JFC final curtain-raiser. The Monaghan men were more comfortable winners than the scoreline suggests with four of Eskra's points coming in stoppage time.

Two Peter Hughes' frees helped Eskra to a 0-2 to 0-1 lead after five minutes before Truagh hit back to lead by two points with 11 minutes gone. Cathal McCaffrey and Niall Marlowe drew the Tyrone kingpins level, but Truagh dominated the second quarter to take a 0-9 to 0-6 lead into the break.

Truagh picked up from where they left off with a succession of points from David McKenna, Christopher McKenna, Paudie McKenna and Mark Counihan following the resumption to lead by 0-15 to 0-8 entering the closing stages. Peter Hughes, Aaron Kelly and Paudie O'Brien hit late points for the losers, but Truagh's victory was never in any doubt.
