Waterford's Mahony ruled out

January 08, 2013

Tipperary's John O'Neill and Philip Mahony of Waterford during the Munster Under 21 Hurling Championship Quarter-Final at Semple Stadium.
Waterford hurler Philip Mahony will be unavailable for the entire 2013 campaign.

The Ballygunner clubman - older brother of Pauric - is currently in Thailand and will travel to America for the summer.

He made his debut for Na Deise against Clare in last June's Munster SHC semi-final and went on to form a formidable midfield partnership with Stephen Molumphy.

With Molumphy having confirmed last week that he will be unavailable for the current season due to army commitments, the loss of Mahony comes as another major blow to Waterford manager Michael Ryan.

As if the double departure isn't enough, there is also a worry that Aidan Kearney could miss the whole season due to a shoulder injury.
