Ballybay ended a 25-year wait for a Monaghan SFC success when getting the better of Clontibret at Clones yesterday.

County star Paul Finlay exerted a major influence on proceedings from his centre-forward berth while left corner-forward Colin Malone found the back of the Clontibret net in the 19th minute.

Ballybay led by 1-5 to 0-3 at the break and extended their advantage with five unanswered points after the resumption.

However, Clontibret battled back with points from Dessie Mone and Connor McManus and the first of two goals from Vincent Corey.

Finley replied with a free for the eventual winners but Corey's second goal, on the stroke of full-time, cut Ballybay's lead to three points.

Corner-back Ryan Wylie sent over the insurance point for Ballybay in the second minute of stoppage time.
