Leitrim SFC final: Gaels end Glencar's long reign

October 08, 2012

Leitrim's Emlyn Mulligan
Melvin Gaels 2-7
Glencar/Manorhamilton 0-7

Goals from James Phelan and substitute Jason McGuinness proved decisive as Melvin Gaels ended Glencar/Manorhamilton's five-in-a-row bid in yesterday's Leitrim SFC final at Páirc Seán MhicDiaramada, Carrick-on-Shannon, yesterday.

Intermediate champions last year, the Gaels opened up a 0-4 to 0-2 lead by the end of the first quarter thanks to points from Brendan Brennan and county star Emlyn Mulligan. With seven minutes remaining in the first half, Phelan reacted quickest to a Mulligan free which came back off the upright to help the Kinlough men a 1-4 to 0-4 lead at the break.

Mulligan increased the Gaels' advantage with two pointed frees straight after the restart, but Glencar/Manor grabbed the next three scores the leave the game in the melting point entering the final quarter.

But the challengers weren't to be denied. They tagged on points in the 44th and 50th minutes before McGuinness bundled the ball to the net with six minutes remaining to put a stop to Glencar/Manor's five-in-a-row dream.
