Offaly GAA is mourning the death of Larry Coughlan, who was corner back on the county's 1972 All-Ireland winning football team. A retired army commandant, Larry hailed from Geashill where he played for the local Raheen club. He enjoyed a long career with the Faithful County, first coming to notice as a sub on the first Offaly team to win the Leinster championship in 1960. He was only 19 at the time. He went on to win All-Ireland medals in 1971 and '72 when Offaly defeated Galway and Kerry respectively. He didn't play in the '71 final, but was a key figure at left corner back in the following year's success. A true gentleman, Larry lived in Newbridge, Co. Kildare where he was laid to rest this afternoon.
