Odlum, Liam

The late Liam Odlum The passing of Newtownmountkennedy man Liam Odlum was greeted with much sadness locally but his legacy lives on through three grandsons currently playing for the local senior football team. Liam's passing at Loughlinstown Hospital was sudden and came as a surprise to anyone who knew of had met him. Throughout his years he was an avid fan of Newtownmountkennedy GAA club and was a regular attendee at nearly all their home games, also making frequent trips to away grounds when they were on their travels. His loving wife, Anna, passed away in 1989, and was always missed by her dotting husband. Liam and Anna's four sons all brought the locality and their parents plenty of joy, not least from their performance when donning Newtownmountkennedy jersey. Richard, David, Liam and Seamus were all highly regarded players, with Liam also representing his county at senior level. Keeping it in the family also daughters Susan and Joyce, both of whom also helped out Newtown GAA club with the administration side of things. Having bred such a talented brood. it was only logical that such skills should be passed on to the next generation as well. Liam's grandchildren, Ross Odlum, Dean Odlum and Cathal McNicholas all represent the Newtownmountkennedy jersey senior team. Dean and Cathal represent Wicklow at under-21 level as well, while Dean was also crowned young player of the year at the recent Newtownmountkennedy Dinner Dance. Liam worked in the local factory 'Metal-Spinners' for a good number of years before his retirement. But even in his retirement. But even in his retirement he kept himself busy and was well known around the town as quite the handy man who could turn his hand to most things. He was very much an outdoors type person and a particularly skilled fisher-man. He was also a keen shooter travelling around different parts of County Wicklow. Considering the massive contribution he made to both the football club and Newtownmountkennedy in general, it was only fitting that the club made a guard of honour at his well attended funeral as a means of bidding a fond farewell to one of their favourite sons.
