Fergal Ogs club notes

May 03, 2016

U12's - Our U12s footballers kicked off the week with a home tie against Barndarrig in Ballywaltrim Park on Monday. Barndarrig made the stronger start, taking the game to Fergal Ógs in the early stages, not giving the Bray team a chance to get a footing in the game. Barndarrig's early dominance led to their first scores with the visiting side finding the back of the net while also taking their points with ease. There were two great performances from Oisin Allen and Jack Allen at the back, who worked tirelessly to prevent further scores, while Cian Byrne and Caithlin Doyle started to win ball in midfield, and drove through the opponents half, taking scoring duties on themselves. Both sides went in at halftime, knowing that there was still plenty of football left to be played.
The 2nd half saw a much improved performance from the home side with a well worked Cian Byrne  goal being followed by two points, while Michael Doran created problems for Barndarrig at half-forward. Also playing a significant role in the sides resurgence was Kara Molloy at full-forward, who constantly ran into space, giving options to the ball carriers. Eleanor Ripley took on the same role when she came on for Kara, while Ryan Fegan and Ross McAteer also battled up front, not giving an inch. When Barndarrig regained control of the match, Caithlin Doyle was put in goal to help strengthen the side at the back, and she pulled off an abundance of quality saves, keeping her side in the game. The two sides traded scores for the remainder of the game with Barndarrig's extra size and strength being an important factor in Fergal Ógs being unable to close the gap. The tie ended with a well deserved win for Barndarrig. Many thanks to them for travelling up to us.
The Fergal Ógs team was: Pearse O'Keeffe, Oisin Allen, Jack Allen, Ryan Fegan, Kara Molloy, Saoirse O'Hanlon, Ross McAteer, Caithlin Doyle, Luca Ciobanu, Eleanor Ripley, Michael Doran, Cian Byrne and Shane Buta.
Men's Hurling - Our men's hurlers played their opening fixture of the junior hurling league, when they hosted Arklow Rocks Parnell on Wednesday in Ballywaltrim Park. Arklow Rocks made an impressive start to the game, registering their first point right from the throw in. Their pace and the speed of their ball movement caught the Schools Road men off guard from early on and they struggled to make any in roads  against a fitter, stronger Arklow side. Two Arklow goals were met with two points from play by David Dixon at full forward to open the Bray sides scoring account. Fergal Ógs then scored their first goal courtesy of a Gary O'Neill pass that found Paddy O'Brien on the wing, who in turn launched the ball behind the 20m line to the forwards. Alan Hughes battled for it and in the ensuing ruck, the ball dropped to John O'Toole who found the back of the net. Fergal Ógs scored again when Stephen Moorehouse bet his man to the ball and found O'Toole again for another point from play. Arklow responded, firing missiles from midfield, many of which sailed over the bar, while the ones that dropped short created problems for the backs. Arklow used their superior range to keep the backs under pressure, while at the opposite end, Dan Kennedy got on the end of a breaking ball and blasted it past the white line for Fergal Ógs second goal. Kennedys goal was the last ray of light in what soon became a one sided affair, with Arklow Rocks taking control of the game.
In the 2nd half, Alan Hughes found a point from play, with Arklow Rocks responding with an array of scores that went both under and over the Fergal Ógs crossbar. The game was over as a contest halfway through the second half, and the sounding of the final whistle saw a final score of Fergal Ógs 2-4 Arklow Rocks Parnell 6-18. The team was Des Whelan, Gary Fitzpatrick, Éamonn McKenna, Jamie McDonagh, Gary O'Neill, Mark Dempsey, Martin Hill, Stephen Moorehouse, Jason Sommers, Paddy O'Brien, Alan Hughes, Dan Kennedy, John O'Toole and David Dixon. Manager: Gary Murphy.
The teams next fixture will be an away tie against Avondale.
Men's Football - Our men's footballers were due to play Rathnew on Thursday but the match was postponed. Date TBC.
Nursery - Our clubs nursery was indoors on Thursday due to the weather. It takes place every Thursday 5-6pm on the clubs main pitch or indoors in St. Fergals school hall if the weather is bad.
U8s and U10s - Our U8s and U10s footballers used the free week in the Go Games fixtures to take on Enniskerry on Friday. A great evening of football was had. From the U8s, there were great performances from newcomers Theo McKenna and Evan Wakefield, while the rest of the team also performed very well on the evening. Well done to all the team of Cameron Mahon, Joshua Temple, Michael Martin, Brandon Mitchell, Szymon Siwczok, Arianna Mahon, Evan Wakefield, Theo McKenna and Natalie Cymerkiewicz.
The U10s had a weakened team due to confirmations and the bank holiday etc, but still gave a good account of themselves. Megan Keogh made her debut and was one of the standout performers, stopping many Enniskerry attacks at the back, while Jake Peare was impressive in midfield.
The U8s and U10s next match will be a hurling trip to Arklow Rocks next Friday.
Girls Section - We will be hosting a Peil Abu evening on Wed May 11th, from 6.30 - 8.00pm on the clubs main pitch. There will be small sided games taking place with all mothers invited to partake alongside their daughters, in what will be a fun evening of football.
