Former Wicklow hurler Don Hyland admits that he was shocked to find out he was going to be inducted into the Leinster GAA Hall of Fame.

The Carnew clubman was honoured during half time of last Sunday's Leinster MHC final between Kilkenny and Dublin.

Hyland had a lengthy career in the Wicklow jersey before deciding to retire from the inter-county scene, but at 42 years of age, he is still an integral part of the Carnew Emmets' senior team.

"It's shocking really, I couldn't believe it to be honest, I wasn't expecting it," Hyland told the Wicklow People.

"The first people you think of are the players you played with. It was easy enough for me. All I had to do was knock the ball over the bar. It was the lads out the field who had to hurl the ball into me.

"And credit has to go to John Henderson who turned me from a midfielder into a full forward. I didn't thank him for it at the time but I do now. And Jack Napier was one of the main men as well. Any match I ever played, Jackie was there and he encouraged me to keep playing."
