Foster, Paddy

August 31, 2011
West Wicklow lost one of its great characters at the weekend with the passing of Paddy Foster.

Paddy was associated with four different clubs in a long lifetime in the GAA and enlivened all of them with the antics he got up to, first as a player of considerable skill and ability and later as a mentor. After his wife and family Paddy's great love in life was the GAA. He was a Valleymount man, born and bred and started his football with the lakeside club. He played minor football with Blessington and may have learned some of the tricks that endeared he to all who really knew him from another of the characters of the day Jimmy Hughes. He was good enough to attract the attention of the county selectors of the day and got a run with the Wicklow minors.
After marrying his beloved Brigid and moving to live in Dunlavin where he threw himself, body and soul into the promotion of the game at underage level.
He was one of the men working behind the scenes when the Kildare border club had their greatest run ever in minor football, going three years unbeaten in the grade.
His final move was to Hollywood where he also rowed in with the local club and then spent happy years in semi-retirement watching games at their new complex, but still always ready to help out doing the job that made him famous near the end of a long career - goal umpire.
Our sympathy to his wife, son, daughters and extended family.
