Wicklow's Keenan makes national list

January 19, 2012
Wicklow's John Keenan has been added to the national hurling referees' list.

The Aughrim clubman is the only Wicklow man approved to referee at the highest level and is one of three officials from the Garden County on the provincial list (where he's joined by Anthony Nolan from Baltinglass and Kiltegan's Gareth Whelan).

Keenan, who still plays with his club, has enjoyed a meteoric rise since first taking up the whistle just four years ago.

He refereed the county SHC final in 2009 and took charge of the minor and intermediate deciders last year.

He was handed his first national appointment - Friday's Walsh Cup clash of Carlow and UCD - but had to pass the offer up as he's attending a referees' seminar in Croke Park that night.
