Mick was loved by all that knew him

The passing of Mick Hamilton, Kilcandra, Kilbride, has been met with widespread sadness by all those who know him.

All Avondale GAA Club games were cancelled last week due to the death of Mick, the Club President. He gave a lifetime of service to Avondale both on and off the field and his presence will be sorely missed by everyone.

He was courageous as a player for Avondale and always displayed the highest standard of sportsmanship. A true Gael, he also displayed great courage and patience during his long and difficult illness.

Mick's contribution in passing on the skills to juveniles was enormous, as was his help and support in the development of the Sports Complex and playing field in Rathdrum. While his passing is a sad occasion for his wife and family, he will also be a great loss to Avondale GAA and the wider community.

The huge attendance at his funeral was an indication of the respect in which the man was held. After funeral mass in Barndarrig Church, the funeral travelled to Rathdrum and was met by hundreds of people at the Cross Roads. A large guard of honour of former, present and juvenile players lined the routes to the cemetery. Representatives of the County Board and many clubs in the county were among the attendance.

Sympathy is extended to his wife Alice, son, daughters, brother, sister and many, many friends. May he rest in peace.
