Wicklow SFC: Earls strikes late to earn replay
October 06, 2008
Kiltegan 1-11
St Patrick's 2-8
An injury time point from county star Paul Earls saved a replay for St Patrick's against Kiltegan, as the two sides played out an enthralling draw in Sunday's Wicklow Senior Football Championship final at Aughrim.
After a good opening start, inspired by an early point from John Keogh, Kiltegan took in a 1-5 to 0-4 lead at the break after Sean Furlong's penalty found the net on 27 minutes.
A quick 1-1 from Dara O'Sullivan within four minutes of the restart brought St Patrick's level, but four unanswered points coming from Rory Finn, James Doyle, Derek Daly and Furlong gave Kiltegan some comfort heading into the final quarter.
On 54 minutes Earls netted the rebound of Paudge McWalter's rasping shot which came off the crossbar and landed in the path of the full-forward, who made no mistake as he tied up the game on 2-7 to 1-10.
A brave run forward from corner-back saw Geoffrey Bermingham point Kiltegan back in front heading towards the game's close.
However, Earls was on hand to provide another twist in the tale as he gathered possession and lashed over the evening's equalising score from the awkwardest of angles to rescue a draw for St Patrick's in injury-time.
