Peter Keogh floats that group team idea again

September 26, 2008
Wicklow GAA President Peter Keogh returned recently to one of his hobby horses, the idea of having more group teams involved in the championship in an effort to get players from the intermediate and junior ranks involved in senior during the Miley Cup campaign. Peter remarks that many young men from non-senior clubs have presented themselves or were called into Hugh Kenny's and Mick O'Dwyer's set-up and while a few of them did manage to make the transition from lower ranks with club to senior at inter-county level many simply failed to make the grade. The likes of Alan Byrne (Annacurra), Billy Norman (Eire Og), Seanie O'Neill and Paddy Byrne (Ballymanus) did manage to make it on to the senior panel but many more were not held on to. Keogh seems disappointed that previous attempts to introduce divisional teams into the championship failed and as far as he in concerned the reason is that the clubs simply failed to buy into the process whereas in the likes of Kerry it is part of the recognised system.
