Dick Foley made a huge contribution to Kilcoole GAA

September 12, 2008
The death took place recently of Richard (Dick) Foley of Main Street, Kilcoole, a man who was associated with the local club for much of his life. Dick was a centre forward on a great Kilcoole team that captured the Wicklow senior championship in 1954, the third such title for the club and the last one that they have won. Kilcoole beat St. Patrick's in that low-scoring final. Jimmy Hatton, the famous referee was also on that team. In 1950 he won an Intermediate championship medal with the club when Kilcoole beat Annacurra in the final and he held Junior Hurling championship winning medal being on the team that won twice. He also played in the senior hurling final of 1954 when he was on the losing side that had to give way to Barndarrig. His association with the club spanned three decades beginning in the 1940's and as a player and mentor he made a most significant contribution right up to the 1960's.
