New Wicklow manager Eamonn Scallan is pleased with his new squad, despite missing so many key players.

The Garden County fell to an eight-point defeat to Antrim in the Kehoe Cup last weekend, but Scallan was looking at the positives in their campaign so far.

With so many players to return to the squad yet, the Wexford native told the Wicklow People that there is strength in depth within the county.

“Considering the players that were available to us, it’s disappointing not to get the win,” said Scallan. “Having said that, the players got a bit of exposure, Bryan Kearney, Seanie Germaine, those lads, it’s going to take time for them to get used to the rigours of inter-county life, whether that be training during the week, the hitting that goes on in a match, during the course of it, the rehab, the recovery, all the rest of it, so, it’s a different way of life to things that they’ve been ordinarily used to, so the more games that they get exposed to the better for them.

“Now, they played Westmeath last week, were beaten, played Antrim, were beaten, but they’re playing on the sixth of January, we’re down to play Kildare, and the way I’d be looking at that is that they have two competitive games under their belts, college will have eased off, exam pressures will have eased off, injuries, a lot of them will be back, more guys will be available. It’s about getting games, it’s about trying to develop your squad, these guys have a tight squad at the moment and it’s about trying to get players into it.”
