Former Wexford dual star Redmond Barry is to fulfil a lifelong dream by riding at the Punchestown Festival later this month.

Barry who retired from the inter-county scene has always had a close association with horse racing and he is set to ride in a charity race at the famed event at the end of April.

Speaking to the Wexford People he revealed that in his younger years both horse racing and GAA were given the same commitment in equal measure.

"I started in Shelmalier Riding Stables when I was about eight and I was in the Killinick Harriers Pony club at nine or ten and I was there for ten years. I was doing eventing, show-jumping and cross-country," said Barry.

"Growing up through my teenage years, horse riding would have been number one to rugby. When I was away in school rugby was the big thing but when I was home in the summer horses and the GAA were fifty-fifty. There were times when I would have even missed games because of horse events."

The St Anne's clubman has secured a one-day licence for the race on Saturday, April 30th and he will be able to get good advice from his brother in law Jamie Codd who rode On The Fringe to success at Aintree last week.
