"I can only hope that someone, somewhere along the line can show some sort of mercy."

Wexford's Andrew Shore. INPHO

Liam Dunne has called on the GAA's hierarchy to show compassion to suspended Wexford hurler Andrew Shore.

Shore last week had a 48-week ban confirmed by the Central Hearings Committee after playing a match in Coventry in November mistakingly believing he had filed the relevant transfer papers.

He has so far been afforded no leniency from the powers that be but could yet receive a reprieve if the Reinstatement Committee recommends a pardon to Central Council this Friday. Dunne has called directly on the Association's president and / or director-general to intervene if necessary:

"You've a 24-year-old guy wanting to hurl," he is quoted in The Irish Independent. "He's been suspended for five months. It was not a crime that he committed or anything. He thought he had the paperwork in order, but there was something that wasn't right with the forms.

"I think Andrew has paid enough of a penalty, and I hope that Paraic Duffy and Liam O'Neill might intervene somewhere along the line. We're trying to keep young fellas hurling. Does a guy deserve 48 weeks for what he did? I don't think so.

"I can only hope that someone, somewhere along the line can show some sort of mercy."
