Wexford to arrive stateside

One of the biggest wins in New York's history was against a storied Wexford side in the 1958 St Brendan Cup. It was played at Croke Park and the intensity of the affair is still talked about to this day. The Rackards, Ned Wheeler, Mickey Furlong, Brendan Hennessy and Martin Murphy all played major parts on both sides of the line in a trilling encounter.  Next week  more storied Wexford hurlers will arrive Stateside as a number of former stars of the county arrive for a five day vacation. Some members of the  All Ireland winning side of 1996, will be part of the 30 strong group, While they will not play any games will here, they will be in Gaelic Park on Saturday the 21st at 6 pm  for some pictures and nostalgia.That morning three of the travelling group are visiting Shannon Gaels in Queens for a light training session with the under 8 and 10 hurlers of the Queens club. The Wexford side with line-out positions when they defeated Limerick to win the counties sixth title in 1996 was as follows
D. Fitzhenry, C. Kehoe, G. Cushe, J. O'Connor, R. Guiney, L. Dunne, L. O'Gorman, A. Fenlon, G. O'Connor, R. McCarthy, M. Storey, L. Murphy, T. Dempsey, G. Laffan, E. Scallan. Subs: B. Byrne, P. Finn, P. Codd. Seven of the side . O'Gorman, Dunne, Fenlon, McCarthy, Storey, Murphy, Dempsey also received All Stars that year while the side also won back to back Leinster Titles in 96 and 97. On Saturday evening at approx 7 pm the party will head for McKeons at 996 McLean Avenue where the  food and drinks will flow with a chance for their friends supporters and GAA admirers to meet and greet them.  Old stories will revive memories and it promises to be a great evening on the Avenue.
