HL QF: Reid hat trick sees Cats through

March 30, 2014

Kilkenny's TJ Reid. INPHO
A hat trick of goals by TJ Reid helped Kilkenny to a 4-22 to 2-16 win over Wexford at Wexford Park this afternoon.

Reid was in great form and he turned back the clock with a vintage display that saw him finish the match with 3-08.

Wexford were well in the game in the first half and they went in trailing at the break by just one point 2-10 to 1-12.

Nonetheless, Kilkenny showed their class in the second half to pull away and record what was a comfortable win in the finish. And they now go on to face Galway in the semi final.

After 15 minutes of play, Kilkenny lead by 1-05 to 0-04 with Walter Walsh cracking home their first goal. The TJ Reid helped himself to 1-03 as the Cats went eight points in front. Reid's goal came after Matt O'Hanlon failed to clear his lines.

Wexford kept plugging away though and some fine points saw them close the gap. Then when Ian Byrne scored a goal on the stroke of half time, there was only one point between the sides.

In the second half, Kilkenny stepped up a gear and further goals by Reid saw them go 4-14 to 1-13 ahead by the end of the third quarter of the match.

Rory Jacob pulled back a late goal for Wexford, but their neighbours had the contest won at this stage and they introduced the likes of Henry Shefflin and Michael Fennelly to give them some much needed game time.
