HS hurling team of the week

March 17, 2014

The hoganstand.com hurling team of the week.
Dublin and Clare have three representatives each on our hurling team of the week following their wins over Kilkenny and Waterford respectively.

1. Chris O'Connell (Antrim)

The Saffrons netminder pulled off a number of vital stops as they pushed Cork all the way in Division 1B at Ballycastle.

2. Niall Wynne (Offaly)

Corner-back Wynne epitomised the grit displayed by Brian Whelahan's Offaly side as they eked out a draw against Limerick.

3. Peter Kelly (Dublin)

AS Conal Keaney said afterwards, Kilkenny are always going to get goals but full-back Kelly and his defensive team-mates stood firm in the face of the potent Kilkenny attacking threat.

4. Tom Condon (Limerick)

Condon was one of the Shannonsiders better performers against Offaly but the Munster champions will be disappointed at letting a point slip.

5. Brendan Bugler (Clare)

The latest in a long list of fine individual displays by Bugler as the Banner saw off Waterford with 13 points to spare at Cusack Park.

6. Iarla Tannian (Galway)

Tannian was an influential figure for the Tribesmen and the game was effectively over as a contest in the 60th minute before he was sent off for a second yellow card offence.

7. William Egan (Cork)

Egan was one of the few Cork players to catch the eye as they laboured to a three-point victory over Antrim in Ballycran.

8. Ian Byrne (Wexford)

Byrne justified his late call-up to the Model County's starting 15 when sending over 10 points against 14-man Laois in Wexford Park.

9. Joey Boland (Dublin)

Boland enjoyed a very productive shift against the Cats and hit three first half points as Anthony Daly's side gave themselves a real chance of preserving their top flight status.

10. Alan Devine (Westmeath)

Devine was on target with 2-1 as Westmeath secured a much-needed win for under pressure boss Brian Hanley against Kildare.

11. Podge Collins (Clare)

The All-Star pick-pocketed Waterford for 1-2 and caused plenty of headaches for the Deise rearguard.

12. Danny Sutcliffe (Dublin)

Led the Dublin attack superbly, scoring 1-5, and his direct opponent Tommy Walsh was called ashore midway through the Parnell Park clash.

13. Niall Healy (Galway)

Tipperary had no answer to goals from Healy, Conor Cooney and Jonathan Glynn and the right corner-forward also chipped in with three points.

14. Shane O'Donnell (Clare)

The All-Ireland final replay hero scored 2-2 and also had a hand in goals scored by Donnellan, Collins and Peter Duggan's goals.

15. Patrick Horgan (Cork)

Horgan's personal haul of 0-11 (8fs, 65) helped Cork cement their number one position in the Division 1B table.
