Mullingar Shamrocks club notes

August 21, 2017

Mullingar Shamrocks Clubhouse a Mecca for 1D fans!

According to the Sunday Times 'the clubhouse of the Mullingar Shamrocks GAA club, where he began performing in Stars in Their Eyes-type talent shows' is 'one of numerous locations' visited by One Direction fans on their pilgrimage to places associated with Niall Horan. If it is in the Sunday Times it must be true and maybe it's time to get the Blue Plaque on the wall!

Mullingar Shamrocks version of Stars In Their Eyes is where success stories begin. This is the show that is mentioned in all the One Direction biographies. Niall Horan identifies the response to his performance of Jason Mraz's I'm Yours in this Shamrocks show as one of the factors that gave him the confidence to audition for The X Factor. And of course, Niall's father Bobbie was a member of the Mullingar Shamrocks Under-21 team that won the 1979 county title.

Senior Championship

This is the week that has the potential to define our senior championship season beginning on Tuesday against Garrycastle in Ballymore at 7.00pm. The only certainty about this match is that a defeat for Garrycastle, our great modern-day rivals will eliminate the dominant team of the 2000s. A battle royal is in store and now more than ever we need all our supporters to roll-out in Ballymore and support our footballers and team management who have worked so hard during the year in preparation for the challenge that is championship football. This is followed on Sunday night (27 August 7.00pm) by the challenge of Tyrrellspass, the 2016 county finalists with a place in the knock-out stages of the championship almost certainly on the line. We also have two important junior games scheduled and a win in both would guarantee Shamrocks a place in the quarter-finals of the championships.

Under-16 Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 3-16 Milltownpass 0-8

This was the final game of the group stages of the county under-16 championship and Shamrocks emerged as convincing winners against Milltownpass. This team is the most improved team in the club and their performance in this match provided more evidence of progress. Goals from Brian Farrell, Ronan McHugh and Jack Gillen as well as five points from Trevor Keena proved decisive in securing this victory.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Seán Óg Hynes; Matthew Siode, Emmett Walshe, Mark Flynn; Niall Ouchbakou, Eoin Kilduff, Cian Fox; Jack Gillen (1-3), Trevor Keena (0-5); Peter Hynes (0-2), Brian Farrell (1-2), Andrew Shaw; John O'Reilly (0-2), Ronan McHugh (1-0), Zak Aherne (0-2). Substitiutes: Tolu Onamusi, Barry Nwokeiwu, Ciarán Luby

Minor Ladies Gaelic Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 0-10 Tyrrellspass 2-4

Well done to our minor girls who battled hard to draw with Tyrrellspass in the opening round of the championship. After leading by 0-7 to 1-1 at half-time, the girls fell behind but responded well and recovered to secure a well-deserved draw.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Chloe Flood, Ciara Bauer, Melek Fagan, Michelle Morris, Ellen Sleator, Ellen Corroon, Carla Gibney, Nicola Groenewald, Louise Gannon, Susanna Buckley, Katie Rock, Sarah Geoghegan, Zara Gilligan, Roisin McKnight, Eadaoin Byrne, Una Raeside.

Summer Skills Camp

The Mullingar Shamrocks Summer Skills Camp ended in traditional fashion on Friday afternoon with a Pizza Party in the Clubhouse. Sixty young boys and girls took part in the second week's camp with almost 40 involved in the first week. Well done to all those who participated. A special word of thanks to all those who were involved in the coaching and who devoted so much of their time on a voluntary basis in what was a superbly organised event directed by Robbie Boyle. The club isn't taking bookings for the Halloween Camp just yet!

Under-10 Ladies Football Blitz

Our Under-10 Girls were out early on Saturday morning for their Go-Games Blitz hosted by St Loman's in Lakepoint Park. St Lomans, Killucan, Moate and Loughnavalley also took part. Mollie Maguire, Linda Raeside, Carley Oherron, Ella Briody, Sarah Ford, Arlene Oherron, Katie Matthews, Ella Moore, Zara Corroon and Grace Daly lined out for Shamrocks. Every player is a winner using the Go-Games concept.

Celbridge Under-10 Blitz

While our Under-10 girls were playing in Lakepoint Park, Celbridge was the venue for our Under-10 boys team where they competed in the Go-Games Blitz organised by the Kildare club. Mullingar Shamrocks played in a group that included Whitehall Colmcille's, St Kevin's (Kildare) and Leixlip, winning all three games. We then played and defeated St Loman's before our last match against Wexford's Castletown which we lost by the minimum margin. A great day-out for the young players and a chance to test their skills against players from other counties in a fun and non-competitive environment that is central to the Go-Games concept. Thanks to the team coaches Paul Aherne, Barry Maguire and Ollie Keating for their work with the team on this occasion and throughout the year. We were represented by Padraig Casey, Ted Aherne, Ben McNamee, Dylan Burke, James Murtagh, Tom Daly, Charlie Foy, Declan Newman, Ronan Byrne, Brian Wycherley, Ruari Gilmartin Paul Keating, Zach Coyne and James Ryan
