Delvin club notes

August 21, 2017

The late Harry Barry

It is with regret that we inform you of the passing of former Club President Harry Barry at the age of 93. Harry was one of the last few surviving members of Delvin's last senior championship winning team of 1953. He won senior championship medals with Delvin in 1949,1950,1951 and 1953. He continued to be a great supporter of the club over the years with the famous Barry Cup played for by some of Ireland's top hurling clubs throughout the 80's and 90's. To the Barry family and friends we extend our deepest sympathies. Funeral in Delvin on Tuesday after 12 o'clock Mass. Go ndéana Dia grásta ar a anam dílis.

Senior Hurling Championship

Delvin                      2-19
Oliver Plunketts     1-16

We finished off our group championship games by making it 6 wins from 6 against a resilient Plunketts side on Sunday evening in TEG Cusack Park.  We were down by 6 pts midway through the opening period and struggled to get into the game. We finished the half well with points from Cassidy, Kelly and Alan Clune and went in at half time down 1-10 to 0-10. We gave a much better account of ourselves in the second half and when Darragh Clinton goaled from a penalty after a foul on Ger Clune we finished stronger with a deserved goal for Ger Clune and some great scores from Alan Clune, Kelly, Cox and Carolan. Our captain Frank McGrath led by example from full back and we ran out deserving winners in a scoreline of 2-19 to 1-16. We await now in the quarter final the winners of the Lough Lene Gaels v Castlepollard playoff.

Our U14 footballers had another great win in the championship midweek defeating Millmore Gaels in Clonmellon on a scoreline of 2-7 to 1-5. We had a couple of injuries to contend with early in the game but the team put in a very spirited performance to take the points. Well done to all of the players and mentors.
