Division 3

St Lomans Mullingar 2.09 Multyfarnham 1.11

St Lomans went into this Division 3 League encounter against Multyfarnham knowing that a win was a must to have any chance of remaining in the Division. Despite a number of setbacks during the game the blues delivered the goods and won by the narrowest of margins.

St Lomans goalkeeper Johnny Moran made a save in the early seconds of the game and when the rebound was won by the blues a counter attack ensued resulting in Daryl Quinn fisting to the net from a Michael Gleeson pass. The dream start continued when James Cox kicked a point and his score was followed by a goal from wing back Chris Gilbert. The same player added a point soon after. St Lomans suffered two major setbacks when the midfield pairing of Jonathon Plunkett (a nasty injury) and Daniel Sheridan withdrew with injury. These changes upset the blues momentum as Multyfarnham clawed their way back into the game scoring 1.04 in the second quarter with Billy O Loughlin scoring a point in the midst of the Multy scores. Things could have been worse but for a goal line clearance from full back Neil O Toole.

The blues started the second half two points to the good and James Cox extended this with his second score of the game. Both teams enjoyed spells of dominance but St Lomans never gave up their lead. Garrett Hickey was deadly accurate from placed balls scoring three frees all executed with the outside of his boot to curl the ball over the bar. James Cox added to his tally with another point. As Multy mounted serious pressure in the closing stages the St Lomans defence really stood up to be counted lead by the experienced duo of Conor O Donoghue and Neil O Toole. Chris Gilbert's speed proved crucial with his breaks out of defence easing the pressure at times. The visitors got the deficit down to a single point but St Lomans held on for the win.

Division 5

St Lomans Mullingar 0.07 Ballymore 2.10

St Lomans suffered defeat away to Ballymore in the Division 5 League on Tuesday evening last. A lack of accuracy in front of goals would prove costly for the blues.

The home side registered four points in the opening twenty minutes and a last gasp goal line clearance from St Lomans stalwart Tommy Lambden denied them a goal. It wasn't until the twenty second minute that St Lomans got off the mark with a Niall Mc Gurran point. He added a second point soon after but a further goal and two points left Ballymore 1.06 to 0.02 up at the break.

Pat Walsh and James Cox opened the scoring in the second half but their points were soon cancelled out by Ballymore. Walsh and Johnny Mee were unlucky not to score goals in the opening ten minutes of the half but Ballymore soon took control of the game once again. St Lomans defender Jack Tyrell made a goal line clearance while goalkeeper James Mc Kenna made two great saves. Chris Gilbert, James Cox and Niall Mc Gurran added points but it could do nothing to overturn the deficit as the home side added a goal and points in the closing stages.

Team; James Mc Kenna, Jack Tyrrell, Darragh O Keeffe, Declan Colgan, Michael Gleeson, Chris Gilbert, Tom Lambden, Pat Walsh, Johnny Mee, James Cox, Kyle Mc Gurran, Conor Matthews, Niall Mc Gurran. Subs Used; Johnny Moran & Andrew Mc Kenna.

U14 Boys Championship

St Lomans U14 boys began their championship campaign when they played Killucan in the Raharney Hurling Club grounds. The relatively new pitch made for ideal conditions and deserving for both teams considering the effort that ensued for the sixty minutes.

Scores were in short supply for most of the first half as St Lomans took a while to get a foothold in the game however points from Danny Mc Cartan, Nathan Mc Cullagh and Fionn O Hara(free) gave them a two point lead (Killucan registered a point in between these) going into the final minutes of the half. Ricardo Lingi was the driving force in the team and was involved in most of the early exchanges. A high ball dropped into the St Lomans net to give the home side the lead on the twenty five minute mark but the aforementioned Ricardo rallied the troops as he kicked a point of his own before setting up Nathan Mc Cullagh for a goal after a classy side step from the full forward. Fionn O Hara showed his class with two well taken frees to leave St Lomans 1.06 to 0.01 in front at the half time.

Hugh Mulhearn added a point at the start of the second half before Killucan got their second goal. It was from here St Lomans turned the screw. The defence upped their game considerably and would only concede two further points. Alex Mc Cormack, Darragh Smith and Eoghan Hogan were the stand out players in the back line. Fionn O Hara stepped up a gear and was unmanageable for the remainder of the game. Danny Mc Cartan added 2.02 to his name while Nathan Mc Cullagh buried in his second goal in the closing stages to seal the win.

On Saturday the lads made the journey to Caulry looking to add to their opening round win. Caulry defeated the lads in the Feile competition but the blues overturned that result on Saturday. The game was a thriller and end to end stuff with both teams leading at different stages of the game and also level on several occasions. St Lomans were reduced to fourteen players for the last twenty minutes but showed great character to grind out a one point win after scoring 5.16. The lads now have two wins from two with five games to play.
