All Ireland U16C Championship

The U16 travelled to Pearse Park in Arklow on Saturday to take on Wicklow in the last of the league games in this championship.  Once again the team put in a storming performance and ran out winners on a scoreline of 6-16 to 0-01.  With four wins out of four the team has qualified for the Semi Final which is scheduled to take place on 15th August.   Well done to all concerned.

Team & Scorers: Edel Conaty, Emma Patton, Shaunagh Maher, Aine Brady, Aoife O'Malley, Meadbh Scally, Catriona Kennedy, Sheila McGrath (1-03), Ciara O'Looney (1-01), Rachel McNamara (0-03), Jane Nangle (1-02), Ava Balfe (1-02), Chloe Flood (1-01), Hannah Core (1-03), Muireann McKenna (0-01).

Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Premier Junior Championship
The Junior team played host to Limerick on Sunday afternoon in Cusack Park.  In very wet conditions Limerick started the strongest with a goal courtesy of Ellana Mulcahy in the first minute before Westmeath had a chance to settle.  Limerick full forward, Claire Keating, added a free a minute later after good Limerick pressure and it wasn't looking good for Westmeath.   However that turned out to be Limerick's last score for almost 50 minutes with Westmeath taking over and going a scoring spree.

Muireann Scally got the team on the scoreboard with a free in the third minute, followed a minute later by a Denise McGrath point.  McGrath raised the first green flag of the afternoon less than a minute later following good work by Deirdre O'Donovan and Muireann Scally.  Scally added her second score - a lovely point from the wing.  Mairead McCormack sent in a free which was caught by McGrath who turned and put the ball in the net to leave Westmeath 2-03 to 1-01 up after six minutes.  Deirdre O'Donovan was fouled out on the wing after twelve minutes and Scally duly pointed the free.  McCormack (2) and O'Donovan added further points before O'Donovan got her first goal of the afternoon at the end of the half to leave the half time score Westmeath 3-07 Limerick 1-01.

Westmeath started the second half with a third point from McCormack in the first minute followed closely by a pointed free from Scally.  Scally added to her tally five minutes later with a '45 before Sarah King added a further point.  O'Donovan sent in a long range shot after 11 minutes that found its way straight to the back of the net and when the hard-working Pamela Greville pointed after 13 mins it was all but over for Limerick.  They didn't give up however and but for a couple of great saves by Debbie Ennis and good defending all round they could have had a couple of goals.  One of the saves resulted in a '45 which was duly scored by Claire Keating. O'Donovan cancelled this out with a point before Keating clawed one back with another pointed free.  Westmeath finished the stronger however with Scally scoring her sixth point - a free - and McGrath added her third goal to leave the full time score Westmeath 6-13 Limerick 1-03.

This was a great all round team performance with all six forwards scoring and the hard working defenders keeping the Limerick scores to a minimum at the other end.

Next up for Westmeath is a trip to Roscommon next Sunday.
