U8 Challenge: July 4 v  Longford Slashers, Ballymahon

On Saturday last , twelve of our Under 8s travelled along with our Under 11s to play Longford Slashers in a challenge in Ballymahon. Unfortunately Slashers could not field but not to be outdone, our Under 8s took the opportunity to have a worthwhile training match among themselves. Such is their appetite for hurling nearly all of our Under 8s are lifting off the ground and striking from the hand, which bodes well for the future. Well done to Alex O Donovan, Kyle Mahon, TJ Turley, Ryan O Suilleabhain, Alex Bolger, Sam Heaton, Ruairí Dolan, Stephen O Connor, Aaron Hardiman, Liam OFlaherty, Sean O Neill, Darragh Bradley.

U11 Challenge: July 4 v  Longford Slashers, Ballymahon

Southern Gaels travelled to Ballymahon for an under 11 challenge game. 15 players made the trip and show cased their hurling abilities.

Playing against the breeze in the first half, our hurlers had to be crafty with their movement of the Sliotar. Their passing paid off with an early goal and super point.

Longford came more into the game with some fast puck-outs working well, from which they were able to launch the ball into their forward line. But the Gaels backline held firm, and sent the ball back out as soon as it came in, with us getting a better grip on midfield, we managed to score a few more and give us a good lead at half time. Many thanks to Ryan Fallon who braved the challenge and played with Longford for the second half to allow every player get a game. Playing with the breeze, the Gaels excelled, tackled well and in particular jab lifted the ball at pace out of trouble, to burst out and pass the Sliotar off. There was some great battling and most players got moved to allow them play in a different position. With an honest work ethic, Gaels ran out winners. Panel for the morning were:

Diarmuid Murtagh, Jack Mulvihill, Calum Devaney, Luke O'Connell, Michael Dolan, Ryan Fallon, Cian Geary, Johnny Martin, Oisín Flynn, Bobby Nugent, Odhran Dolan, Dano McMonagle, Luke Farrell, Oisín O Flaherty and Cillian Geary.
