Westmeath hurling received a huge boost in Owenbeg today when St. Ernan's became the first team from the county to win a Feile na nGael Division 1 hurling title.

A combination of Delvin and Brownstown, St. Ernan's fared best in the slippery conditions to beat Kilkenny's Kilmacow by 2-4 to 1-2. Dean Ennis played a captain's part by scoring 2-2 for the north Westmeath outfit who had trailed by a point, 1-0 to 1-1, at the break.

The historic victory should lift the mood in the Lake County after a disappointing display by Johnny Greville's minors in yesterday's Leinster semi-final against Dublin.
