Under 10:

The Garrycastle Under-10 squad welcomed St. Brigids from Roscommon in to Garrycastle on Wednesday evening for some challenge games. On a good evening for football, even allowing for a strong breeze, a good turnout of players allowed us to field two teams at 11-a-side. To suit St. Brigids, some of whose players are contesting a community games final soon, we played two rounds of 20-minute matches, with the teams re-fixed after the first round of games. Due to the similarity of colours, Garrycastle played in unfamiliar white colours on the night.

In the first game, the Garrycastle "Green" team started off playing into a strong breeze and had the better of the possession during the first half. Although playing against the wind, and with some very wayward shooting, at half-time the "Green" team trailed by just one score. After the break, and with the aid of the wind, the "Green" team quickly took the lead, and held it to the end of the game, fighting off a strong St. Brigids comeback, to win by one score. In the second game for the "Green" team, the first half was a real-end-to-end battle, with neither team able to pull away, and at the break, the teams were level. In the second half, as tiredness set in, the scores became more plentiful, but the balance between the teams remained, and at the final whistle, the teams could not be separated on the scoreboard.

In their first game, the Garrycastle "Red" team also started playing into the wind, and building from an excellent performance in the middle of the field, built up a slender lead by the break. Playing with the aid of the wind, they closed out the game and took the honours on the evening. In their second game, the "Red" team started to show the effects of their exertions from the previous match, and struggled to make use of the wind in the first half, going in level at the break. In the second half, St. Brigids opened up a narrow gap, and despite the best efforts of our "Red" team, held on to their advantage to run out deserving winners.

Garrycastle "Green" Team: Dean Grehan, Sean Doyle, Anthony Mannion, Conn O'Hara, Diarmuid Murtagh, Tom Sheehan, Jamie Carroll, Kealan Ryan-McIntyre, Jack Allen, Oisin Nugent, Kyle Greene, Nathan Kelly, Nathan McKeon.

Garrycastle "Red" Team: Matthew Conner, Cian McCormack, Jazman Rafiz, Jack Mulvihill, Killian Keegan, Conor Sheehan, Tom Daly, Brian Mulvihill, Sean O'Donoghue, Thanh McCay, Killian Redmond, David Carter, Brandon Devaney

Junior championship: Garrycastle 1-14; Killucan 2-6

Garrycastle made a great start to this game scoring six points without reply. Killucan did not score until the 11th minute with a well worked point and

two minutes later they had the ball in the back of the net. Garrycastle were rocked at this stage and when the home side hit for another goal they began to take control of the game and led by 2-2 to 0-7 at half time. The second half saw Garrycastle take back control with some great point taking. Jonny McGuire took control of midfield with Mark Curley while Tom McHugh and John O'Shaughnessy took over in the back line. Overall it was a great team performance in the second half as Garrycastle ran out worthy winners.

ACL Div 1:     Caulry 2-11;  Garrycastle 1-7

The senior team were comprehensively beaten by the home team in Mount Temple last Saturday. After a hesitant start Garrycastle appeared to take control of the game but wasted several opportunities until Gary Dolan flicked a Matthew Guiheen centre to the net. Leading by 1-2 to 0-3 at the break Garrycastle had increased their lead to three points midway through the second half when Caulry hit a purple patch, scoring 2-2 in the space of a few minutes. Garrycastle never recovered from this set-back and Caulry stretched their lead with some fine scores in the remaining minutes.

TEAM: Cathal Mullin, Mark McCallon, Jack Donohue, Alan Fox, Neill Rattigan, Mark Curley, Gary McCallon, Justin Barrett, Aidan Browne, James Dolan (0-1), Gary Dolan (0-1), Matthew Guiheen, Conor Cosgrove (0-3, 1 free), Ciaran O'Neill (0-1), Alex Gardiner (0-2, frees).

Subs: Sean Brennan for O'Neill; Gavin Ward for Fox.

ACL Division 2:  Shandonagh 1-13 Garrycastle 0-8

Garrycastle's second team are facing a tough challenge to retain their Division 2 status as a result of this latest defeat to Shandonagh in Garycastle on Sunday evening. With several players absent for various reasons, and with most of the team playing their second or third game of the weekend, this was a listless performance by Garrycastle and Shandonagh had the better of the first quarter. However, the home team finished the half well and went in at the break level at 0-5 each. Garrycastle hit the front in the second half but a rather fortuitous goal gave Shandonagh the impetus and the confidence to kick a succession of points to run out winners by eight points.

TEAM: Mark Keenan, Ben Kennedy, John O'Shaughnessy, Gary Mullery, Jonny McGuire (0-1), Mark Curley, Anthony Larkin, Justin Barrett (0-1), Ciaran O'Neill (0-2), Cathal Mannion (0-1), Peadar Mulvihill (0-2), Enda Keena, Kenny Dolan, Paul Gunning, Paul Mulvihill (0-1).

Subs: Padraig Cosgrove for Dolan; Bill Kelly for Keena.
