Leinster U16B Semi Final

Pride of place this week goes to the U16 team who defeated Kilkenny by one point after a marathon game in Cusack Park last Sunday.  This very well drilled side started strongly making the most of the first half breeze.  Points from Hannah Core (2), Jane Nangle (2), Jade McKeogh and Ciara O'Looney (a free) saw the team six points up after 23 minutes.  During this period the team were on top throughout the pitch with some fantastic defending by the backs who dealt with everything Kilkenny threw at them.  It took Kilkenny 24 minutes to get on the scoreboard but once they got through they showed their class scoring 1-1 in a minute.  Westmeath responded well with a Ciara O'Looney free, before Kilkenny clawed one back.  The final score of the half was a well taken point by an in-form Hannah Core to leave it Westmeath 0-8 Kilkenny 1-2 at the break.

As expected Kilkenny came out determined to make the most of the wind in their backs and scored the first point of the half after two minutes.  Westmeath had their first score of the half courtesy of a Hannah Core free after nine minutes before Kilkenny pounced for their second goal after 17  minutes to draw level for the first time 0-9 to 2-3.  Aoife Doherty put Westmeath in front again with a point before Kilkenny drew the match for a second time with a point after 29 minutes.  With 5 seconds on the clock it looked like heartbreak for the team as Kilkenny scored a goal to go three points up with normal time up.  However, the supporters didn't have too long to be downhearted as the never say die attitude of the girls led to a goal by Jade McKeogh less than a minute later.  Shortly afterwards referee, Ray Kelly, blew the final whistle leaving the score after normal time Westmeath 1-10 Kilkenny 3-04 and 20 minutes of extra time for everyone to look forward to.

Kilkenny had the benefit of the wind for the first period of extra time and they wasted no time, getting two goals in five minutes to go ahead for the first time.  However, substitute Niamh McCarthy rifled the ball to the back of the net before Kilkenny added a point leaving it 2-10 to 5-5 at half time.  The second half of extra time saw Westmeath fight back with two points from Ciara O'Looney (free) and Jade McKeogh before Ciara O'Looney scored two goals from frees much to the delight of the Westmeath supporters.  At this stage Westmeath were four points up and Kilkenny pressure led to them scoring their sixth goal in the dying seconds but it was the home team who were celebrating a one point win when the final whistle went.  Final Score Westmeath 4-12 Kilkenny 6-5.  This was a super game of camogie with everyone playing their hearts out.  Westmeath now face Dublin in the final following their win over Kildare next Sunday 19th April.
