Rising Westmeath football star Israel Ilunga has failed in his bid to secure a club transfer from Castletown-Finea/Coole/Whitehall to Rosemount.
Ilunga, who was part of this year's Westmeath U21 team, had sought the move as he's going out with a girl from Rosemount and is currently living in nearby Athlone. However, his transfer application was thrown out by the Competitions Control Committee on Thursday night on the basis that it was lodged three weeks after the January 14 deadline.
The decision leaves Ilunga between a rock and a hard place. He can either sit out the rest of the year, which would harm his chances of breaking into the Westmeath senior set-up, or resume his club career with Castletown-Finea/Coole/Whitehall who, like Rosemount, compete at intermediate level.
Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ilunga was the centre of racial abuse allegations two years ago when the Lake County defeated Meath in the Leinster MFC semi-final.
