The sweetest one yet
Huge congratulations to the panel , Des Dolan, Seán Connell,Aidy Dunning and Gary Johnson for bringing back the Flanagan Cup to Garrycastle. This was a huge effort from everyone involved. Thanks to Eamonn Keena and Terry Larkin for keeping the lads well fed all year with soup, sandwiches and even Mr Freezes. To Anne Larkin who washed the jerseys all years. Senior Championship Final

GARRYCASTLE 1-11          MULLINGAR SHAMROCKS 0-8

 

Garrycastyle captured their 7th Westmeath senior football title with a well merited win over Mullingar Shamrocks in Cusack Park on Sunday afternoon.

 

Playing into a very stiff breeze Garrycastle dominated the early minutes and took the lead in the 2nd minute when wing back, Gary McCallon, broke forward to point from the left. Dessie Dolan got his first score when he converted a free ij the 10th minute. Dessie also pointed in the 18th minute to leave Garrycastle ahead by 3 points. Mullingar Shanmrocks had their first score, a point from play in the 22nd minute and added their second point soon after to reduce the margin to a single point. Garrycastle then grabbed a vital score when Alex Gardiner was put through and he finished emphatically to the net in the 26th minute. Mullingar Shamnrocks had the last score of the half, a point in the last minute to leave Garrycastle ahead at the break by 1-3 to 0-3.

 

Mullingar Shamrocks had a bright start to the second period and added points in the 33rd minute from play and in the 35thminute from a close range free. Damian Rushe then pointed for Garrycastle in response. Garrycastle continued to have most of the possession but Mullingar Shamrocks added a point to reduce the gap to just one point again by the 37thminute. James Dolan pointed for Garrycastle after good approach play and Dessie Dolan pointed from a free which he won himself. The sides exchanged points, the Garrycastle effort coming from substitute, Michael Monaghan. A pointed free from Dessie Dolan increased the Garrycastle lead and another substitute, James Duignan, pointed in the 54th minute. Mullingar Shamrocks broke forward looking for a goal but had to be content with a point from a free. However, it was Garrycastle who finished strongly and added a point from a Dessie Dolan free and one from play by Michael Monaghan in added time. The final whistle from Pat Fox was greeted with great joy by the large Garycastle support in attendance.

 

This was a fine performance from Garrycastle, who combined their great experience with some new young talent to great effect. The defence was solid throughout and Cathal Mullin's goal was well protected. Mark McCallon, Jack Donoghue, Karl Henson and John Gaffey were most prominent in breaking up the Mullingar Shamrocks attacks. Aidan Browne and Justin Barrett won the midfield battle and worked back to defend when the opposition had possession. Dessie Dolan was selected as Man of the Match, and rightly so for his tireless work throughout the field and accuracy from placed balls. He was well supported in attack by Alex Gardiner, James Dolan and Damien Rushe. Substitutes Michael Monaaghan and James Duignan contributed scores when called into action.

 

So Garrycastle move on to represent Westmeath in the Leinster club championship against the Longford champions, Emmet Og Killoe, a game which will be played in Cusack Park on the 9th November.

Maryland Tang win Jim McHugh Tournament Memorial Cup.

The finals of this years Jim McHugh Memorial Tournament were held in Garrycastle on Saturday evening.

In the Plate final, Millmore Gaels emerged victorious after a great tussle with St. Malachys/Ballinagore. The plate was presented to captain Ryan Greenwood by Garrycastle senior player Doron Harte. The man-of-the-match was Ben McGurran, also from Millmore Gaels.

The Shield final was won by Caulry, who overcame Garrycastle in the final. The Shield was presented to the winning captain, Luke Buckley, by Mrs. Nuala McHugh, widow of the late Jim McHugh, in whose honour the tournament is held. The Man-of-the-match award was presented to Roan Sweeney, from the Caulry club, by Jim McHugh jnr., son of the late Jim McHugh,

In the Cup final, Maryland /Tang dethroned last years champions, Moate All-Whites, after an excellent game of football as conditions worsened, and the rain came down heavily. It was a double celebration for the captain of the Maryland Tang team, Philip Temple, as not alone did he get to raise the Jim McHugh Memorial Cup, presented by Mrs. Nuala McHugh, but also took the man-of-the-match award, presented by Garrycastle senior player Tom McHugh, also a son of the late Jim McHugh.

Overall, a great night of football was provided by all 6 teams who took part, and all the teams, players and mentors, are commended for playing their parts in a great sporting occasion.

Thanks also to the referees, linesmen, umpires, pitch co-ordinators, shop helpers, and everyone else who helped out in any way on the night. A special mention to Mark Redmond who is the drive behind this tournament which is proving to be a great success.

Dublin City Marathon
Congrats to Deirdre Keena,  Bríd Dillon, Leigh and Elaine Denby, Danny Mullery, Martin McCallon, Simon Carr and Oliver Corcoran and many more who completed the Dublin City Marathon last Monday Morning.
