Junior Championship Round 8

Saturday evening in Kinnegad saw Multy and Miltown battle it out in a physically draining game of football, in the last round of the group stage of the Westmeath Junior championship. Neither the Intermediate or Senior championships expect clubs to play eight games to get to knock out football yet somehow it is occurs in the Junior.
The game itself was a nervous affair, both sides took a long time to settle. Neither team showed any sign of their true ability or potential yet Milltown managed to find their range early and clocked up a couple of points which led to Multy chasing the lead for the rest of the opening period. Ciaran McCabe made an absolutely fantastic save to keep Multy in it when the Milltown full forward broke through on goal.
Danny Loughrey was impressive in attack but it was his full forward partner Chris Cannon who scored the best point of the half for the Maroon men, with a sweet strike off his left boot. As usual our defence were working heroically with Leo Blake, Paul Smith and Paul Moran battling hard.

The second half opened up a bit more and Loughrey managed to tag a few impressive scores alongside a sweet kicked sideline strike from Emmet Feerick. Noel Kiernan was finding his range from the deadball and Rory Boyce and Ronan Wallace were taking charge in the half back lines. Milltown gave themselves a job to do when they went a man down and indeed it looked like Multy would cruise to the finish line. Jason Tighe and Enda Carter were beginning to get on top of Summers and McLoughlin for Milltown, who were very impressive all day. Ciaran Madden kicked a lovely point off his right and it looked as if we were heading for the win. David Wallace came off the bench and his running was starting to torture the Milltown defence. Indeed he came very close to finishing off the game when he broke through on goal but he dragged his low hard struck shot agonisingly to the left of the post.

The last few seconds of the game saw Multy sitting on a three point lead with scores from Loughrey and Kiernan but, with victory within our grasp, the gods of luck and fortune dealt us a horrible turn when Summers won the ball for Milltown in midfield and belted the ball towards goal. Somehow our defence had gone missing and the ball fell appetisingly for a Milltown man who duly despatched it to the back of the net. Of course the referee blew the whistle on the kickout without giving either side a chance to win it but in the end we were the happier side.

Milltown are a good team and a credit to their club and area, it is unfortunate that their season is over.

It is the first time in a long, long time that we have reached this stage in the championship. Credit must go to the players who have worked hard so far, however at the end of the day it means nothing unless we go further. Every player is expected down to put in the maximum effort over the next few weeks. Everybody who supports the club also needs to do everything that they can do. We need the whole club pulling together.

Underage

There are a number of fixtures for the underage in the coming weeks. On Wednesday the Under 12s play St Lomans in Multy, this is the first game for new mentors Bilial Moran and Andrew McCormack, we would appreciate if all parents could make a special effort to cooperate with the lads in their breaking-in period. On Thursday the Under 14s are playing Tyrrellspass in Multy in Round 4 of the Championship, Joe Kelly and the rest of the mentors would love to see a big support out for the young lads as they attempt to replicate the adult teams accompishments. On Wednesday 3rd Sept the Under 12s face the long trip down to Garrycastle for round 4 of the league. Any support is always needed and if anybody wants to help out with the next generation they are always welcome.
