John Heslin went close to emulating his record scoring feat in last year's Westmeath SFC semi-final by posting an incredible 3-9 for St. Loman's tonight.

The county star famously scored 2-16 for the Mullingar club against Garrycastle at the penultimate stage of last year's championship and at Cusack Park this evening The Downs were on the receiving end as he shot the lights out in a 3-23 to 0-5 victory, which secures automatic qualification for the semi-finals for the reigning champions.

Whereas 2-4 of last year's semi-final tally came from play, he hit 2-6 from play on this occasion with his other goal coming from a penalty.

In the opening game, Killucan put themselves into contention for a quarter-final spot when they overcame Maryland by 2-8 to 0-7, despite the dismissal of former county hurler Conor Jordan in the 19th minute.
