Division 1 : St. Loman's 1-11 Garrycastle 1-10

Garrycastle had their first loss in the ACL Division 1 away to St. Loman's last Friday night in Mullingar.
The visitors got off to a dream start when the ball was worked well from the back and Doron Harte crossed to an in rushing Dessie Dolan who palmed the ball to the net after just one minute of play. Garrycastle added to the goal with a '45 which was perfectly executed by goalkeeper Cathal Mullin. St. Loman's eventually settled and delivered four points in a row to level the score by the 20 minute mark. Garrycastle then missed a number of scoring chances including one goal chance which was blocked for a '45. Cathal Mullin again stepped up but this time was unsuccessful. Two further pointed frees by Dessie Dolan put the visitors ahead. Garrycastle then lost Justin Barrett for a black card infringement. Two further points from St. Loman's brought the first half to an end with the sides level at 1-3 to 0-6.

The first score of the second half just like the first was a goal but this time it was St. Loman's who raised the green flag. Cathal Mullin did well to block the initial shot but the
ball was not cleared and Loman's were quickest to react and find the net. Garrycastle responded with a Dessie Dolan point to keep the visitors in touch. During this third
quarter St. Loman's dominated and started to put daylight between the teams with a lead of five points. Michael Monaghan got on the score sheet for Garrycastle and hit two points in a row to keep the visitors in contention. James Duignan became the second Garrycastle player to receive a black card. In total on the night four black cards were awarded by referee Barry Kelly, two to each side.
With about 6 minutes to go Garrycastle began to come back into the game and were unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty. Instead the decision was a 13 metre free which Dessie Dolan pointed and the same player then pointed from play to reduce the arrears to two points. Loman's rallied again to increase the margin with a point.
With time running out, James Dolan pointed for the visitors which was quickly followed by a Doron Harte point but this proved to be the last score of the game and leave victory with St. Loman's by the narrowest of margins.

Overall, a disappointing outcome for Garrycastle who will rue the fact that they let the home team build up a five point lead in the second half but did well to recover to lose by a single point. On the night, Dessie was the most potent of the forward line delivering the majority of the scores while in defence Jack Donohoe's performance caught the eye.

Division 6 :GARRYCASTLE 2-10 BUNBROSNA 3-5

Garrycastle travelled to Bunbrosna last Sunday morning to take on the home side and came away with a very valuable win in their quest for promotion. Playing into a slight breeze, Garrycastle had a slight advantage in the opening exchanges but each side spurned scoring opportunities before Noel Galvin put over a point in the 5th minute. However, Bunbrosna rocked Garrycastle with a two goal burst with goals 6TH and 7TH minutes and added a point soon after. Garrcastle had a goal opportunity of their own but Tommy Murphy in the Bunbrosna goal brought off a good save from Paul Mulvihill. The home side's lead was further increased by the 14th minute with another point from play. Garrycastle finally roused themselves and Conor Cosgrove pointed from a free in the 17th minute. A Garrycastle goal arrived soon after when Johnny McGuire was set up after good approach play and he fired a shot to the Bunbrosna net. Points followed from Paul O'Donovan, Enda Keena and Johnny McGuire to level matter as the half time whistle approached. However, a poor kick-out from Bunbrosna saw Conor Cosgrove gather possession and he hit a shot from distance over the goalkeeper to put his side ahead. The half time whistle followed immediately with Garrycastle leading 2-5 to 2-2.

Bunbrosna had the first score on the resumption, a pointed free. Conor Cosgrove also pointed from a free for Garrycastle and he also had one from play to increase the Garrycastle advantage. Bunbrosna mounted an attack, and although Cathal Murray parried the first effort on goal, the home side lashed the rebound to the Garrycastle net. Conor Cosgrove hit over another point but Bunbrosna kept pressing and had two points in succession to level the score again by the 54th minute. Garrycastle showed great resolve in the final minutes and points from Conor Cosgrove and substitute, Kenny Dolan, sealed a close fought win for Garrycastle.

There were good performances from Ben Kennedy, Anthony Larkin and Gary Mullery in defence. Johnny McGuire and Ciara O'Neill gave their side a slight advantage in the middle of the field. Conor Cosgrove and Noel Galvin were most prominent in attack.

GARRYCASTLE: Cathal Murray, Gary Mullery, Stephen McGuire, Ben Kennedy, Peadar Mulvihill, Anthony Larkin, Sean Carey, Johnny McGuire (1-1), Ciaran O'Neill, Padraig Cosgrove, Conor Cosgrove (1-5, 0-2f), Noel Galvin (0-1), Enda Keena (0-1), Paul O'Donovan (0-1) and Paul Mulvihill.

Under 8s
Our under-8 group travelled to Tubberclair on Saturday morning for two challenge matches. On a morning that started grey and wet, 24 players were available to make the short trip, and all played their part in two excellent games of football. Each game was 8-a-side, and in order to give every player the opportunity to play, each match was made up of 3 10-minutes "halves". Some excellent football was on show, and it was heartening to see great tackling and blocking on display, showing that some of the training from recent weeks is making it's presence felt. Well done to all who travelled! See the club website at garrycastle.gaa.ie for pictures.

New players always welcome at this age group. Come along to Garrycastle any Wednesday night at 6:30pm.

Garrycastle GAA Under 10 team News.

The Under 10s played their first competitive games of the season on Sunday morning in the South Westmeath League. A combination of Holidays and Communion masses resulted in a very small turnout of players but with just one team from both Rosemount and Castledaly to play it worked out well for all concerned.
Garrycastle were beaten in a very tight game against a strong Rosemount team and were victors in the Castledaly game. The younger players from last years under 8s really showed what they are made of with great battling performances from Oisin Nugent, Than Mc Cay, Jack Mulvihill and Diarmuid Murtagh. An outstanding display from Con O Hara in goal drew applause from both sets of supporters. Frank Mc Kiernan, Brian Mulvihill marshalled the defence well alongside Bill Carmody who had an very strong game in the half back line.
The midfield pairing of Ben Donegan and Andrew Ruane worked very hard throughout and their link up play with Conor Sheehan and Jamie Carroll was excellant .
Overall this was a great display of tackling, commitment , hard work and score taking and this group are certainly heading in the right direction.
A big thank you to Champ Mulvihill who refereed all games on the morning.
