The death has occurred of former Mullingar Shamrocks and Westmeath footballer Frankie Connaughton.

Frankie will always hold a special place in the annals of Westmeath GAA after he became the first man to captain the county on All-Ireland final day in 1963 when they lost the minor decider to Kerry. He had earlier scored 1-3 as the Lake County saw off Dublin by 2-14 to 3-7 in the Leinster final.

Frankie went on to represent Westmeath at senior level before moving to Brazil in 1967 for work reasons and later to Holland. He won county SFC medals with Mullingar Shamrocks in 1964 and '66, and was also a SHC medalist with the now defunct Pearses club in '62.

Aged 74, he is survived by his wife Marie, son Frank Jnr, daughter Rosemary, brothers Colm and Cyrian and sisters Madie and Marian.
