Kilbeggan Shamrocks GAA Notes

October 13, 2019

Ladies are league champions

Our ladies footballers ended the year with silverware thanks to a fantastic 2-12 to 1-7 victory over Mullingar Shamrocks’ second team in the Division 3 league final at Multyfarnham last Sunday.

Goals in either half from Aleisha Fitzgerald and Kim Cobbe proved decisive as we made amends for our disappointing intermediate championship semi-final loss to the county town club six weeks ago. On that occasion, we were severely depleted and had played another championship game against Clann Gaels less than 48 hours earlier.

Restored to near full strength, we gave a much better account of ourselves last Sunday. We led by 1-7 to 0-2 at the break and maintained our advantage in the second half thanks to some great scores from Niamh Durkan and Aoibhinn Jackson.

There were joyous scenes afterwards when team captain Jill Draper received the Division 3 trophy from Westmeath LGFA chairperson Geraldine Giles. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the management team of Martin Maher, Bernie Barrett and Myra Daly for all the work they did with the team, and the players themselves for the dedication they showed throughout the season.

Team: Sabrina Jackson; Orla Daly, Eimear Fox, Jennifer Barrett; Leah Farrell, Triona Durkan, Gillian Heeney; Ayesha Roche (0-1), Aoibhinn Jackson (0-3); Niamh Durkan (0-4), Mairead McCormack (0-1), Kim Cobbe (1-0); Aine Pettit, Jill Draper, Aleisha Fitzgerald (1-1). Subs: Orla Brennan, Fiona Dixon, Tara Dennehy, Katie Coffey, Aideen Pettit, Sandra Garvin, Becky Scally, Edel Gannon and Anna Wrafter.

The late Brian Dalton

The whole community was shocked and saddened to wake up to the terrible news last Friday morning that Brian Dalton had passed away suddenly the night before.

Late of O’Moore Street, Tullamore and Brosna View, Kilbeggan, Brian was due to turn 44 on October 28 next. He was a very popular and well-known figure who endeared himself to the people of Kilbeggan in 2015 when he teamed up with our very own Eimear Fox to win the Scoil an Chlochair Strictly Come Dancing fundraiser before an audience of about 1,000 people in the Mullingar Park Hotel.

Hailing from a family steeped in the GAA, he played for Kilbeggan Shamrocks up to minor level and is remembered as a powerful and wholehearted full back. He was as strong as an ox and also represented the club in Rounders. To his heartbroken family, we extend our deepest sympathy.
