The format for the Westmeath senior hurling and football championships look set to change in 2020.

Already the hurling format will change and there will be a Senior B championship played, but county board chairman Billy Foley stated that the football championship needs to be looked at also.

As it stands, dual players are being forced to play seven or eight championship games in a five-week window.

Foley told the Westmeath Independent that this was unsustainable and unfair to the players with changes set to alleviate that problem.

“It’s very clear that our fixture schedule is very tight and it’s very unfair on our dual players,” stated Foley.

“They are playing seven to eight championship matches over a very short period of time and I feel we need to address that.

“I know the hurling board have changed their format and that will help, but I believe we also need to look at the football club championships and try and find a solution to alleviate the problems that are there.”
