Mullingar Shamrocks Club Notes

June 24, 2019

Under-14 and Under-16 Skills Camp ...

Mullingar Shamrocks skills camp conducted by Robbie Boyle will take place next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (25-27 June) from 10.00 am to 1.30 pm (bring a light lunch).

This is open to all boys and girls playing Under-14 and Under-16 football for Mullingar Shamrocks.

The emphasis  will be on the latest stretching and injury prevention techniques and managing recovery from games, injury avoidance (how to read those hamstring niggles!) and developing game focus. There will also be plenty of skills work and best of all it is FREE ... and who better than Robbie to deliver this initiative.

Sound of the Musicals Launch Night ...

'The Sound Of The Musicals' launch night will take place in The Greville Arms Hotel on Friday next June 28 starting at 7.30pm.

This is the night where the 7 WONDERFUL musicals to be performed in the show itself on 28 September 2019 in the Mullingar Park Hotel will be announced along with the LEAD STARS in each show along with the cast members for each musical.

Let's make the launch night one to remember. All are welcome. We hope to see you there!

Recipes for Success ...

Mullingar Shamrocks as part of its Healthy Club status staged its Recipe for Success programme on Wednesday and Thursday last week. The programme had two elements; a “hands on” kitchen-based cookery workshop and each participant received the Recipes for Success manual  filled with tasty, healthy, performance enhancing recipes that are easy to make specially designed and developed for GAA players. This was s a skills for life workshop – useful for college, work and  sport.

Mullingar Community College provided a wonderful venue for the evenings' practical demonstrations.  Both   evenings were  full of fun and learning as the participants prepared and cooked a Chicken and Vegetable Stir Fry and a Banana and Berry Smoothie. Both dishes tasted magnificently and this was largely due to the wonderful teaching skills of our tutor Eamonn McGowan. Eamonn has been a  Mullingar Shamrocks supporter  since he arrived in Mullingar from his native Donegal to work in the Lake County Hotel, a long time home-from-home for Mullingar Shamrocks back in the day. And of course the initiative wouldn't have happened without the enthusiasm and commitment  of our Healthy Club Officer, Joan Ormsby. Joan has put together a Healthy Club programme second to none.

Mullingar Shamrocks would like to thank the Principal of Mullingar Community College, Mr. Seamus Mohan for making available the superb Home Economics room of the school and staff members Claire Orme, Ben Conroy and Bill Condren for their organisational help; to Maria Burke, Debbie Newman, Eric Smith and Andrina Finch who helped out on the night and a  thanks to Kyle Maguire for his sponsorship of the food ingredients. Check out Mullingar Shamrocks Facebook for more details of the nights' activities.

Div.6 ACL

Our Div.6 team had a fine win against Coralstown-Kinnegad in Springfield on Friday evening.

Shamrocks fielding a mix of the old and the new played some very good football in a game that featured goals from James Grogan, two from Dillon Matthews (the first was a really special effort when he won possession from the throw-in at the start and raced through the Kinnegad defence for the opening score), one from Jack Kelly (it was great to see Jack make a comeback with the Leaving Cert finished and the wrist repaired) and towards the end Paul Aherne got in on the goal scoring act. Robbie Boyle, who won an All-Ireland senior medal with Dublin (v Tyrone) in the last century when Dublin were glad to win an All-Ireland title every decade or so, did some fine high fielding in goal.

No joy for our minor panellists Seán, Mark, Brian and Zach ...

No joy for our minor panellists Seán, Mark, Brian and Zach in the Leinster minor football championship V Dublin.  From the club perspective it was good to have four players on the panel even if they did not see any action against Dublin. It has been a  long time since four Mullingar Shamrocks players made it on to a Westmeath county minor panel.

Well done to Denis and Killian for playing their part in  a solid win against Limerick.

Some perspective on the minor match might be appropriate. (1) This was a fine display by Westmeath in what was a really good game of football with great scores, lots of direct attacking, wonderful skill on display from players on both sides. Gaelic football can be an exciting sport and a game worth watching when the players are not tied up in tactical knots.

(2) Much post-match comment reflected on the contribution made by the Dublin substitutes. This should not have been a surprise as this is what happens when a county with a population of 1.3 million competes on an equal basis with a county of 89,000 people. This is a fact of geography, life is unfair and we have to live with this until the county system is changed in the GAA sometime in the distant future.

(3) Much was also made of the apparent fitness advantage of the Dublin players. This is what happens when a county that received €1.3 million for games development from the GAA in 2018  competes against a county that received €146,000 from the same source for the same purpose in the same year.   This is referred to as financial doping in some quarters but we know since last week that it is not the financial top-loading that is the most significant factor in Dublin's dominance. John Horan, the President of the GAA for Dublin explained that it is the quality of volunteerism that matters. He can't be wrong can he?
