Westmeath captain Aidan Canning raises the 1999 All Ireland U21 FC Cup

St Joseph's GAA club are hosting a one-off exhibition match between Westmeath's 1995 and 1999 All-Ireland minor and U21 winning football teams on Saturday, June 15.

Proceeds from the game will go towards improvement works to the Streamstown / Horseleap Community pitch, which is the home of St Joseph's. Gates open at 1pm, with a warm-up game starting at 2pm and the main game starting at 3pm. Admission is €10 for an adult, while kids are free.

The game is sure to evoke memories of Westmeath's only All-Ireland victories at minor and U21 level, both of which were masterminded by Luke Dempsey. The Lake County beat Derry at Croke Park on September 17, 1995 to be crowned All-Ireland minor champions, with St Joseph's very own Aidan Lennon lining out in goal. Four years later, on May 15, Westmeath shocked Kerry at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick to win the All-Ireland U21 title.

The fact that Fergal Murray and Shane Deering were the only two players to feature in both successes made the U21 victory all the more remarkable.
