Moore, Pat

The Late Pat Moore All of Deise gaeldom has been shocked and saddened at the tragic death in a drowning accident in Finland of twenty-two year-old Pat Moore, son of Pat and Marie of Ballinamuck, Dungarvan, a family steeped in the GAA tradition. Pat jnr. was due to return from his Finnish holiday earlier this week. Instead he will now be returning home in a coffin probably early next week. His father, for long one of the county's foremost dual referees, and presently a member of the County Board executive, had actually arrive in Dublin for last Sunday's big match with other family members when the tragic news of his son's death reached him. Needless to say it was an about turn back to Dungarvan for them to mourn as a family in this time of terrible personal grief. In circumstances such as this things are well and truly put into perspective. Life itself is about much more than sport itself and young Pat Moore's tragically untimely death is the grim reminder, if we need it, of that. Fittingly the GAA authorities ordered a minute's silence before last Sunday's Croke Park game as a mark of respect, and how gratifying it is to report that it was respected as impeccably as it was. The Moore family deserves no less. I know I am speaking not just on my own behalf but on behalf of GAA people the length and breath of the country and beyond in extended heartfelt sympathy to the entire Moore family. A young man with his whole life ahead of him has had it cruelly snatched from him. It is a tragedy of the most profound proportions. Go ndé Dia trócaire ar a anam dílis.
