The Late Michael Kiely Feelings of great sadness and deep regret were expressed at the recent passing of Michael Kiely, Ballytrisnane, Old Parish, which sad event occurred at the Bon Secours Hospital, Cork after a short duration of illness. A native of Old Parish and of agricultural background, he was aged 76 years. Michael's life always centered around farming and he was a corner stone in many of the farming organisations. Honoured with chairmanship of the County Executive of IFA for a number of years, he joined fellow IFA members in 1966 in their walk to Dublin to air their grievances to the Government of the day, regarding the plight of the farming community. Deeply involved with IFA matters all his life, he assisted in drawing up their policies in furthering and championing the interests of those working the land. He was a valued member of Waterford Co-op and later Waterford Foods, played a pivotal role in Cork Marts and assisted with the establishment of FBD Insurance's. He also contributed greatly in his time to I.C.M.S.A. and was a life long member of Macra na Feirme who gave of his best for the Old Parish branch. Michael was man of great energy, vision and understanding and was never afraid of change and kept very much up to date with developments of the farming world. He attended many conferences and his journeys to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Europe brought him very much to the coal-face of agricultural matters in these countries. On his return he was only too willing to share his new found knowledge with fellow farmers. In his younger days he trod the boards like others of his family as a member of Aisteoirf an tSean Phobail and any productions on the local dramatic scene enjoyed his patronage and support. When it came to affairs of Gaeldom, Michael Kiely was a true Old Parish man, who followed The Shocks, GAA and was one of the people responsible for securing a pitch for Old Parish GAA in the early 80s. His passing has left Old Parish all the poorer but yet richer for his presence over the seventy plus Summers. A man who loved his God and his Church, Michael is now enjoying his eternal reward. He will be greatly missed and mourned by his wife Peg; his son Peter, daughters Patricia and Siobhan; son-in-law Ed, daughter -in-law Eleanor, grandchildren Kate, Peigi, Erica, Gillian and Nicole, brother John, sisters Margaret, Kitty, Bridget and Hannah, his nephews, nieces and many other relatives and friends.
