Power, Matthew

The Late Matthew (Mattie) Power We learned with deep regret and sadness of the recent passing of Matthew (Mattie) Power, 23 McCarthyville, Abbeyside, which sad event took place at Waterford Regional Hospital. A native of Ballyduff Lower, and in his 81st year, Mattie loved his family and was a quiet, gentle unassuming man held in high regard by all who had the pleasure of making his acquaintance. He worked as a stone mason in his younger days beside his uncle from Whelansbridge in the grounds of Mount Congreve Estate before taking up a position with the EB, with whom he began working when the Rural Electrification Scheme was being implemented around the countryside. He remained in this employment for 37 years up to his retirement. His time with the ESB saw Mattie working in such places at Enniscorthy, Arklow, Clonmel and Dungarvan. It was in Arklow that he met with Breda and, after they married in 1963, they moved to Abbeyside to set up home. His passion for GAA developed from an early age, when he lined out for teams up and down the country wherever he was working. But for many years Abbeyside/ Ballinacorty GAA Club and the Waterford Senior Football team were very special to him. Many years were given as a team selector to both and he proudest moment came when the Ballinacorty Senior Football team claimed County title victories in'78,'79 and '81. He enjoyed 18 good years of retirement and loved the days spent around the home making sure the garden remained looking in top condition where he had full colour and bloom all year around. Mattie was a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather. His passing leaves a void that will not be easily filled and is much regretted not only by his sorrowing family but also by his many friends and neighbours. Rest peacefully among the angels. He will be greatly missed and mourned by his wife Breda, sons John Paul and Leo, daughters Mary and Patricia, son-in-law David Ahern (Ballyduff Upper) daughter-in-law Mairead, brothers Paddy (England) Teddy (Waterford), Sean (Dungarvan) and Joe (Youghal) sisters Kitty (Dublin), Peggy and Nancy (Ballyduff Lower), grandchildren Amanda, Christine, Catherine, Ellen, John Paul, Matthew and Thomas, as well as a wide circle of other family and friends. Months Mind Mass for Mattie Power will be offered on Sunday 5th October in St. Nicholas Church, Ballyduff Lower. (Funeral arrangements by Tom Hennessy, Funeral Directors, Waterford).
