Helping his club reach the senior grade is Waterford and Ballysaggart Stephen Bennett’s holy grail.

Bennett scored 0-11, five of which came from play as Ballysaggart defeated Ballygunner to claim the Waterford IHC title.

It is has been a massive rise for the small rural club who only won the junior title a few years ago and Bennett told the Waterford News & Star that it’s the highlight of his playing career.

“It’s the best day I’ve had playing hurling. The first time ever winning the West a few weeks ago but to come down and beat Ballygunner in Walsh Park is unbelievable,” said Bennett.

“I remember starting off playing with Ballysaggart in 2013 and we didn’t even have a field. We were training in a sheep field with two generator lights.

“That’s only six years ago. We won the junior and we thought it would never be beaten but to win a county intermediate is absolutely massive.

“We’ve got a 43 year old playing, we’ve got 46 and 47 years old on the bench. They’ll get to tog out at senior level next year, however that will work out!”
