HL1B: Deise deny Tribesmen thanks to Bennett's injury-time heroics

March 10, 2019

Waterford's Callum Lyons in action against Galway's Niall Burke

An injury-time Shane Bennett goal capped off a remarkable Waterford revival against Galway in Walsh Bark today.

The Deise fought back from 10 points down at half-time to prevail on a scoreline of 1-18 to 2-13 thanks to Bennett’s late intervention.

Paraic Fanning’s charges outscored the visitors by 1-11 to 0-2 when backed by a strong wind after the break.

After a slow start, goals from Jason Flynn and Brian Concannon had placed the Tribesmen in pole position but they played second fiddle to their hosts after the break.

Stephen Bennett took the scoring honours for the winners with 0-10 (9 frees) while Joe Canning raised seven white flags for Micheal Donoghue’s side.

The winners will now take on Clare in the last eight.

Galway, meanwhile, will have a chance to get the disappointment of this performance out of their system when they square up to Wexford next weekend.
