Strabane Sigersons club notes

September 12, 2018

Adult Men;

Our senior men lost out to Eglish on a score line of 1-10 to 0-11 on Sunday in Páirc Mhic Sioghair.

This Friday night our senior men will face Stewartstown in the first round of the Intermediate Football Championship in Healy Park at 7pm, all support for the lads would be much appreciated.

Club Grounds;

On Saturday 22nd September, Páirc Mhic Sioghair will host a Tyrone Championship double header, first up at 4.30pm between Urney and Tattyreagh which is followed by reigning senior County Champions Omagh and Aghyaran. We will be requiring all club members to help out at this event, we will need stewards available from 2.30pm. If available, please contact the clubs Facebook Page or any Committee member.

In addition, we will be doing a clean up on the grounds this Saturday at 9am to prepare for next week’s games.

Youth;

The under 16 boys lost out to Carrickmore in a Grade 1B League Play Off to deem who finished top of the section, the final score was 1-11 to 0-12.

Strabane Sigersons GAA hosted their 15th annual Gearalt Ó Dhochartaigh memorial blitz on Saturday to honour the memory of their past president and lifelong Gael.

The tournament was played in fantastic spirit from the initial group stage games right through to the finals which saw both Strabane teams qualify and play against Urney and Castlederg. Despite the best efforts of the Strabane youngsters Urney were deserving winners of the Gearalt Ó Dhochartaigh Shield as was Castlederg the overall winners of the tournament and took home the Gearalt Ó Dhochartaigh trophy.

On Saturday we had over 30 girls travel to Healy Park Omagh to meet the Tyrone Senior ladies. The girls were put through a few fun games by the senior players, before getting up close and personal with photographs and autographs.

On Sunday, the U12 girls had their County Blitz which was hosted in Páirc Mhic Sioghair. The girls were up against the very experienced clubs of Aghyaran, Badoney and Tattyreagh. Today's blitz also doubled up as the Club's annual Sean Duffy Memorial Tournament. Our girls performed extremely well in every game.

The Sean Duffy Final was contested by Aghyaran and Badoney after a very competitive round-robin league. Aghyaran eventually crossed the finish line as tournament and section winners. Members of the Duffy family were on hand to make the presentation to the Aghyaran winning captain, assisted by Club President John McCrory. Afterwards, John McCrory made a presentation of flowers to Sean Duffy’s sister in appreciation of their attendance.

All teams and parents were then treated to a fine spread of food and refreshments which was very kindly supplied by the Sigersons parents. A special word of thanks to everyone that helped out in any way today. Sean and Veronica for refereeing. Liam, Jason and John for their presence at the tournament, and to our band of loyal parents who looked after the tea and refreshments.

Health and Wellbeing;

Monday was world suicide prevention day, we must be mindful of everyone around us. It is important to ask the simple questions like 'How are you?', you never know what person maybe struggling.

It's okay not to be okay, don't be scared to speak up there will always be someone there for you, if you are seeking a listening ear speak to anyone in the club we can guide you in the right direction

On Monday 10th September 2018 the community groups within Strabane came together to raise awareness to the people of Strabane. We provided a range of information on mental health & wellbeing and the services that are available within the Strabane area and please remember there is always someone there to talk too.

Each Community group left out an empty chair in and around Strabane to raise awareness of World Suicide Prevention Day and show support to those who have lost friends and loved ones through suicide.

The ‘empty chair’ is significant for a number of reasons; they are a memory of those who have lost their lives to suicide, they are to remind those who have lost friends and relatives to suicide that they are still in our thoughts.

The club extends its deepest sympathies to the friends and family of Helen Callaghan, St Colman’s Drive, Maureen Devlin, Castlederg and Vera Lindsay, Aughabrack.
